The latest warning from the Ultrasn0w is that if you are updating to iPhone 3.1 you might not be able to revert back to any of the older versions of iPhone. However, 2G users can still downgrade using pwnage tool 3.01 with the 3.0.1 ipsw.

This is what they have to say:

If you update to Apple’s new software using the normal iTunes process, you will lose your ultrasn0w unlock. In fact you may lose it permanently, because for most people the baseband firmware cannot be reverted to a previous version (unlike the main application CPU firmware).

But don’t worry…our PwnageTool program lets you update your main firmware without touching your baseband firmware, so you can still have the best of both worlds. But you must be diligent about saying “no” to your iTunes request this week to update your firmware.

What’s more, you read this article and find out that the blame game has begun no one is ready to take the responsibility . Best policy is to exercise some precautions which might/would save your iPhone from exploding.

Well this is similar to what Nokia faced a few months back when the BL5C batteries(defective) started exploding and a number cases all around the world started popping up. The end result Nokia did commit and replaced all the batteries.

One thing to note here is that this is a common misconception that iPhone or Nokia batteries were exploding due to overheating, unless and untill there is some serious defect (which would cause them to explode the very first time) it is highly unlikely that batteries would explode because of overheating. This is primarily due to the fact that batteries are designed in such a manner that they are able to sustain overheating which is the primary concern for battery designers.

But one thing is assured that explosion can only be caused by the battery.

The main issue which arises is when the battery gets short circuited, the battery gets overcharged (Highly overcharged) or some physical damage to the battery.

How to save your iPhone from these issues, you can follow some simple guidelines:

1.) Avoid overcharging of your iPhone.

2.) Avoid Physical Damage (esp pn its on the battery side i.e back side of iphone)
watch this video for point no 2.
You can use a case or something to prevent this on your iphone and compromise on the show .

3.) Do not keep your iPhone with small metal pieces : errrr sounds illogical but take a look at the video below

There one more point which I am not currently putting it, have you ever wondered why does your iPhone calls beak in between and you say ATnT network suck. Well you may try any nokia phone and the network would just respond fine on it. This is just a speculation as per my technical knowledge I think iPhone requires more signal strength which causes the iPhone to overheat and may infact affect the battery as in external heating to which batteries are not made for….take a look at the video:

Apple iPhone’s App store is perhaps the most visited online App store and the recent reports (Tuesday)announced by Apple state that App store Downloads have crossed the 1.5 Billion mark. But what was more interesting was that recently in April Apple’s reports stated that they have crossed the 1 Billion download mark. This suggests that App Store has sold 500 million apps in last three months. The reports also stated that Apple App store has close to about 65000 apps.

This recent influx in downloads deninitely has been generated by the faster, speedier iPhone 3GS users. My recent article How much does Apple earn from App Store had some interesting facts which proved by Apple’s App Store has inturn made iPhone a bigger success and gives it a definite edge over its competitors.
But the App Store, despite its success, is not without its problems. Many developers still appear flummoxed by the sometimes ambiguous policies for creating applications and the inconsistency in how they’re applied. For example, MLB At Bat, which streams live baseball games, gets the stamp of approval from both Apple and AT&T, the exclusive carrier, but SlingPlayer Mobile from Sling Media, which streams live television, does not.

And application developers report that trying to get answers from Apple on the inconsistencies or clarifications when their apps are denied is frustrating. Even at the recent Worldwide Developers Conference in June, developers sitting on a panel regarding App Store publishing said the company took no Q&A on the process and referred questions back to its Web site.[Source CNET]

The variety of Apps which are now available on App store at affordable prices have increased a simple touch screen mobile phone as iPhone into a multipurpose gadget which can be used for variety of purposes depending on your choice.

Which is the fastest smartphone? As the competition among the smart phones increases by releasing of a new smartphone almost every month it has become tougher to decide this.Recently PCworld conducted a series of informal tests on three of these smartphones which top the list currently: iPhone 3G S,Palm Pre and the Nokia N97.Though Configuration of all three of them was matchable with Nokia N97 trailing but the performance results showed that their is a twist in the tail.

iPhone 3G S: 600 Mhz processor, 256 mb ram

Palm pre: 600 Mhz processor,256 Mb ram

Nokia N97: 434 Mhz processor,128 Mb ram.

The Following are the details of tests conducted along with the results of these tests ,(To watch the original video follow the link at the end of this article):

1.Power on Test: How quickly a Phone starts

Results: iPhone 3G S(22 seconds),Nokia N97(66s) & Palm Pre(96s)

2. Opening Email Inbox: How quickly you can check your email(Gmail for testing) account,N97 has live feed widgets which refresh realtime.

Results: Nokia N97(1.3seconds) ,iPhone 3G S(1.4s) & Palm Pre(7.5s)

3. Adding a Contact: Each phone requires 2 taps and how quickly you are able to add a contact.

Results: iPhone 3G S(2.4 seconds),Nokia N97(2.5s) & Palm Pre(5.9s)

4. Booted Associated press Application: This was a third party app on all three phones,Test tried to show how quickly a third party app starts and loads content.

Results: iPhone 3G S(3.8 seconds),Nokia N97(15.1s) & Palm Pre(15.4s)

The results showed that iPhone 3G S is clearly leading and Nokia 97 despite having a lower configuration closely followed the iPhone in many cases.Though there are many variables involved like 3G network, OS platform but the mandate was clear its iPhone 3G S the Fastest Smartphone available. However the Palm pre trailed in most of them but the interface and the net surfing was quite comfortable than other contenders.

Check out the video here

Though these are some of the informal tests but speed is an important parameter when you are deciding on buying smartphones.

Thought the crack currently exists only for Windows users(Not windows 7) only, a mac version would shortly be released. The jailbreaking app for the iPhone 3GS code named purplera1n. It enables the installation of third-party software not approved for Apple’s App Store .
As stated on his blog “On the iPhone” , you jsut have to download the jailbreak software and all the instructions would be given while Jailbreaking.

Download Software here.
If you need help email purplera1n.support at gmail and attach your purplera1n.log file.

While checking out the comments from the users who have installed the jailbreak, jailbreaking iPhone 3G S seems like a piece of cake.John Biggs over at CrunchGear is among those who have already given already given purplera1n a go and declares the jailbreaking process “amazingly simple.”

But take note: Hotz does caution that purplera1n is in beta and suggests backing up your data before running the app.

Since the launch of the new iPhone 3G S ,users have been complaining of Overheating issues. Finally Apple has accepted this fact and according to the Guardian, Apple has also warned iPhone 3G S users. The reason currently being sighted for the overheating of iPhone 3G S is not a battery design problem (as anticipated by many specialists) but instead the upgradation done by Apple from iPhone 3G to iPhone 3G S.While iPhone 3G central processor chip ran at about 400MHZ the new iPhone 3G s is about 1.5 times 600MHZ.Though there has been advacements in the chip technology which should mean that the 600MHZ chip should use lesser amount of energy than its predecessor.

Hoverever ,Apple hasn’t come out with a solution to the problem and not to mention that there has been reports of iPhone getting heated up to significant amount while charging which Apple hasn’t mentioned on the website.

The official warning on Apple’s Site:

“Operate iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS in a place where the temperature is between 0º and 35º C (32º to 95º F). Low- or high-temperature conditions might temporarily shorten battery life or cause the device to temporarily stop working properly.

Store iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS in a place where the temperature is between -20º and 45º C (-4º to 113º F). Don’t leave the device in your car, because temperatures in parked cars can exceed this range.

If the interior temperature of the device exceeds normal operating temperatures, you may experience the following as it attempts to regulate its temperature:

The device stops charging

Display dims

Weak cellular signal

Temperature warning screen appears with the message “iPhone needs to cool down before you can use it” (see image below)“

This message appears when the operating temperature has become too hot. This is a safety mechanism that protects the components of your device. If this message appears, you should turn the device off, move it to a cooler environment, and allow it to cool before resuming use.

Note: When this message appears, the device may still be able to make emergency calls.

Some conditions and activities that may activate the Temperature warning message:

Leaving the device in a car on a hot day.

Leaving it in direct sunlight for extended amounts of time.

Using certain applications in hot conditions or direct sunlight for long periods of time, such as GPS tracking in a car on a sunny day or listening to music while in direct sunlight.

Some side effects which can be caused by overheating:

Overheating of iPhone might reduce its batterylife and using the 3G mode accelerated the overheating process.

Overheating can also lead to reduction in speaker volume and last but not the least can burn your pants( as reported on one of the Forums)

Every one searches for Apps these days on iPhone, but when you buy an app , you check its price and compare its utility. You pay almost $199 for an iPhone then start buying music which might costs you around $500 and then some apps which would further cost you (say $100 according to your assesment), so the overall iPhone might cost you $800 or more.
But many of the iPhone users dont pay a penny for the apps they download, for the music they listen and iPhone for them costs only $199.When you compare this way,you get a decent idea why most of the iPhone users are switching to jailbreaks and hacks.
I recently installed hackulo.us and the collection of hacked apps they have is just awesome. You can download most of the paid iPhone apps for free(including the Oxford dictionary and thesaurus $34 which I have on my iPhone, thanks to Hackulous).
While you might not find cracks to all apps but most of them are available, you can download AIM,iBlacklist,iFlashReady( a Software version of flash for the iPhone camera) and many more for free.
Though there isnt any exact number of downloads from hackulo but a rough guess would definately be morethan 1 million downloads (estmated from forum their members) from Hackulo.
Rumours suggest that Hackulo are now preparing ahack for the App store and they have figured out a way to bypass all the authentication required while buying an app from the app store.
In India we cannot download things from App store as most of the downloads aren’t available, So I turned to Hackulo and its just simply amazing.

Haculo Forums

Updating to 3.1 Beta firmware results in updated Baseband firmware so you lose your Unlock so iPhone dev team suggests to snot to upgrade untill they figure out a way in preserving baseband version.

This warning doesn’t apply to iPhone 2G (first Gen iPhone users) as it uses BootNeuter for the unlock instead of UltraSn0w.
