500 million Apps Downloaded in 3 Months!

Apple iPhone’s App store is perhaps the most visited online App store and the recent reports (Tuesday)announced by Apple state that App store Downloads have crossed the 1.5 Billion mark. But what was more interesting was that recently in April Apple’s reports stated that they have crossed the 1 Billion download mark. This suggests that App Store has sold 500 million apps in last three months.The reports also stated that Apple App store has close to about 65000 apps.

This recent influx in downloads deninitely has been generated by the faster,speedier iPhone 3GS users. My recent article How much does Apple earn from App Store had some interesting facts which proved by Apple’s App Store has inturn made iPhone a bigger success and gives it a definite edge over its competitors.
But the App Store, despite its success, is not without its problems. Many developers still appear flummoxed by the sometimes ambiguous policies for creating applications and the inconsistency in how they’re applied. For example, MLB At Bat, which streams live baseball games, gets the stamp of approval from both Apple and AT&T, the exclusive carrier, but SlingPlayer Mobile from Sling Media, which streams live television, does not.

And application developers report that trying to get answers from Apple on the inconsistencies or clarifications when their apps are denied is frustrating. Even at the recent Worldwide Developers Conference in June, developers sitting on a panel regarding App Store publishing said the company took no Q&A on the process and referred questions back to its Web site.[Source CNET]

The variety of Apps which are now available on App store at affordable prices have increased a simple touch screen mobile phone as iPhone into a multipurpose gadget which can be used for variety of purposes depending on your choice.

Why are iPhone App prices falling?

Consider this as a marketing strategy or the overcrowding , it seems that the App developers and their companies aren’t quite happy. In the past week there have been a plethora of Apps whose prices have fallen and they have fallen by quite some margin(considering their original price). Many are even being sold for free.

Many apps which were earlier paid are now available for free at App store,Paids Apps which are now free Apps like iFuel lite [$2.99 now free ],Attack P2P[game $0.99],Learn your Presidential Flash cards[$0.99],Baby sleep[$0.99],Free Ringtones[$0.99],Duke Soundboard[$0.99],iTough[$0.99],iFairywand[$0.99],Jtimer[$0.99],VarbiusClock[$0.99],

IamBored[$0.99],GymGoal[$0.99],Wallpaperplus[$0.99] are among few apps which are now free from their previous prices written in brackets. And this list is only for past two days you may check out for more.

Strangely that many apps whether from smaller groups to individuals or big corporations everyone is giving sale or revising their prices on the apps available now at App store.If this is a marketing strategy then its good for the consumers or is it a way to remain safe from piracy or hacking[...which now runs into a big business].

How much does Apple earn from App Store?

Apple’s Famous App Store is perhaps the most popular app store ever this gets proven from the shear participation of people and the number of Apps it has i.e Over 50,000 beating the nearest competitor RIM Blackberry which has just over 2000 by quite a margin.Have you ever wondered how much would Apple be earning from App store, recently a Wall Street Journal Article estimates around $150 million considering the fact that Apple earns aroung 30% of the commision on every App sold at the App store.

However Apple’s earning via hardware i.e iPhone selling earns revenue arounf 2.8 billion per year.But the Bottom line is that App Store Apps cost apple nothing , the commisions are pure profits. The research,innovativation and the developers are all outside works. In addition to this as the Apps in App Store increase the scope and the utility of the Apps would also increase in different sectors and this would inturn trigger the iPhone Sales.

The article states some interesting facts that Apple’s research is more of smart work and while Apple spends around 3.4% of its fiscal 2008 revenue on R&D, compared with 6.2% spent by RIM and 12%-15% by Microsoft, Google, Motorola and Palm in their latest fiscal years…[more on WSJ] App Store is a master Stoke from Apple which has not only accelerated the revolution of Touch which was brought by the iPhone but also helped in keeping the iPhone at top position.
