No SIM card installed : iPhone
Two days ago my iPhone after recieving a message started showing a strange error ” NO SIM INSTALLED ” , initially i thought this is a minor trouble and would go away after a few switching off and on but it did not .This is the latest problem that has now creeped in my iPhone! I tried searching out for forums and locate what all options do I Have now.
This is what i have come up with:
1. Manual iPhone reset: Keep on holding the power button for few second till you get the switching off screen (Do not slide to switch off) then press the home button without releasing the power button and you’ll see that the screen turns black then the Apple symbol comes (You can remove pressing your buttons now).
This has worked for many but not for Me.So I had to explore more.
2. This problem may occur because of HEAT : In many cases the iPhone was overheated and this led to damage in SIM card. Replacement of the SIM card by a new one has solved this problem for them.
Sadly this wasn’t the case for me, as my sim was relatively new and i would have tried about 5-10 odd sims in my iPhone without any success and moreover my sim was working on these mobiles.
3. The problem of dust particles: In Few cases cleaning of the SIM card and using a ear cleaner for removing the dust inside the SIM socket of iphone has solved it for them. Once again I tried this without any success.
4. Using your SIM in a strange way: Yup, its strange but this is what people have posted on the blogs/forums. Take out your SIM and put it in some old Nokia or any other mobile phone till it catches the signal i.e the signal bars appear then remove the SIM and put it in your iPhone.
No success for me!!
5. Repetitive on off and setting reset: Another idea which has clicked for some is switching on and off your iPhone and checking if it has started detecting SIM. Or going to Settings->General->reset->Reset network and using network reset or reset all repetitively till your iphone finally detects sim.
I can image what would have led them to trying this sort of thing, but it has worked out for them not for ME.You can even try repetitive switching on and off the airplane mode though it wasn’t useful for me.
6. Restore and Unlock: I did this as my iPhone is an unlocked/jailbroken one so resotred and unlocked it again and trust me this is the worst idea of them all . I lost all my apps, games and other stuff despite taking a back only to understand that iTunes backup would not back up 3rd party installations!
7. Dropping your iPhone: This is another way but its actually really hard to do. Try dropping your iphone in the vertical position both from the side where you place your sim card and other side where you put your charger. I do not guarantee as this is dangerous thing to do but has worked for many people.
I am still trying to figure out a way to get out of this No SIM Card installed, more suggetions are welcomed.

Hey mate it sounds like u have the exact same problem as me ive tryed everything but still nothing did u get ur iphone from overseas at all?? cause i dont no how 2 fix it. If you find anyway 2 get it working i would love 2 no
I just had this happen on a first gen iPhone. Notice my date. I’m a late adopter to 3.0 and I actually just updated to 3.0.1.
It started immediately after I installed 3.0.1
I had never had the first problem with this phone since I purchased it in June of 07. It actually caused me to have to restore my iphone after the first install attempt.
Anyway, the first time it happened I freaked out. Tried most of the steps above; all rather intuitive I suppose. The only thing which worked for me was the cold boot scenario. Holding down both buttons until the Apple comes on and then goes away. Turning it back on, it originally came back immediately. But then went away again. It continues to go through this process, and erratically. It seems to happen every hour or so now.
I’m now looking for corollaries…
So I’m under the assumption that it’s something in 3.0 or 3.0.1, as that is precisely the moment it occurred.
As I mentioned, mine is a 1st Gen purchased in June of 07.
My wife always points out that I don’t have a cover on mine. She has a cover on her’s and swears it’s the reason hers is not having any issues. We bought ours together originally, and she has 3.0 but not 3.0.1
I’ve never had it jailbroke and I update it via an Original Aluminum Intel iMac from that same year, released in August I believe.
She updates hers on an windows system…
Any of you having similar conditions surrounding this issue? It’s just annoying now. I haven’t gone to check the sim card though yet. Perhaps it’s just old, and the update is a coincidence… Just not enough data yet to make a determination….
same problem… tried everything and just nothing!!
Hi Guys,
I had the same problem and I did everything suggested but no luck! I was about to give up (sadly) until I saw someones comment on Twitter that said “I dropped my iphone and it wouldnt work. So I dropped it again, and now it works!”. Being hopeless I thought I would give it a shot, and from about 3cm from the table i dropped it head first. You wont believe it but it started working again!! I coudlve almost cried! So I thought I would share this with u… I hope it works for you guys, I know how lost u feel when your phone isnt working
Anyone tried this yet?
Hi all,
My iphone has started working and would be writing a post on this very soon! Still searching&researching on how this miracle has happened !
Thanks! first suggestion worked for me.
The drooping thing actually worked for me,
i jarred it before it started acting up and this took care of it, i did it at the top by the sime card itsself
Just dropped mine (purposefully this time) after trying many other thing and IT WORKED!
Hi I am also having the same problem and my phone has been like this for 2 weeks I have spent so many hours trying to fix it.
I also tried the dropping the Iphone idea but it didnt work can someone please help me?
no sim car installed appeared this morning on my iphone and would not go away regardless off doing every suggestion above…got to the last suggestion of dropping it so it landed on the sim car area….low and behold its fully working! thanks!!
i had the same “no sim card installed” problem, i had tried everything until i read the dropping it on its head idea above, tried it about 5 times.. nothing. then i tried dropping it on its bottom.. WORKED 1ST TIME!!
Alright, so i have the same problem as just about everyone here, and nothing worked, so i got down to “drop your phone” it didn’t work but i took the sim card out and dropped it and put it back in and it worked. For the time being at least, it works for like 2-3 days then stops, so i’m going to at&t later to see whats wrong.
@Nathan,
thanks for sharing your experience!
I was getting the no sim message also, I took the phone and dropped it on the top edge onto the carpeting, It worked, weird……..
okay so ive done everything, mainly the restarting
and it worked with full bars.
and i needed to restart my phone again because i installed an app. and then the sim problem came back.
i deleted the app and all but still nothing.
The SIM problem only happens to me sometimes when I turn my phone off and back on. It’s SO frustrating because I never turn it off, only occasionally because I feel like it’s healthy for it not to be on all the time…and then it just gives me problems when it was running fine before! Previously I’ve restarted it multiple times but am not exactly what I did to make it work again. Now I tried resetting the network settings without any luck, restarting multiple times, and finally took your suggestions to drop it a few times and it worked!!!!!!! Dropping it on the bottom worked for me – it probably has to do with the placement of the SIM card in the holder, if dropping it on different sides jars it back into working in a different way for each phone. SO SO SO GLAD to read all your comments and it’s finally working again! I think I’m going to take it to the AT&T store anyway.
MY IP’S SIM JACKET HAS BEEN STUCKED!!!
PLZ HELP
i pushed gently, harshly, hardly but all went in vain
I CAN’T BELIEVE! I DROP MY PHONE IN THE FLOOR INT HE RAIN AND THE SIM STOPPED WORKING! FINALLY NOW I JUST TIRED DO DROP MY PHONE OVER AND OVER AGAIN AND IT DID REALLY WORK! I’VE BEEN TRYING TO SORT IT PUT THE PROBLEM SINCE 2 MONTHS! THAT’S BRILLIANT!
MANY THANKS!
dropping phone works like a charm
I just had the same problem and I tried the option of dropping it vertically, I did it on a rug as I was afraid I would break it … and it worked! Thanks. It almost seems like the SIM card just got reset back to its place.
I tried resetting it and no luck. I also tried dropping it on its top, near the power button and it didn’t work. I tried dropping it on its bottom, and it worked after about three tries. Good luck to all!
Well, the first method worked for me….
Wow you’re a genius!! Thank you so much. Soo glad I came across this from google. My phone has displayed no sim intermittently over last few months but yesterday it went no sim and would not reset. Tried resetting network settings, dropping the phone vertically… tried turning it off and back on again and also reset all settings.. but what actually worked is.. and I can’t believe it.. is turning the airplane mode on and then off again once!! Was amazed.. thank you again
I have had this problem quite a few times and one way that has always worked is letting the battery die and then plugging it in restarting it.. just takes awhile.. nothing else has really worked for me
Woowwww! I stand corrected.. thurning the airplane mode off and then on worked like a charm!
I had this happen to my phone and was desperate to try anything fast. My husband is deployed and was going to call tonight. The AT&T stores are all closed so I tried everything else. I tapped my phone on the table vertically on the charger end. After a couple of times the “NO SIM” reading switched to “Searching” and then it was fixed. Thank you so much for this information.
Try taking a piece of sticky tape and protecting the electrical connections on the SIM (large pad format) from the metal bracket it sits in. Easy.
I’m really glad I found this thread. I tried dropping it, and it didn’t work for me, but after I switched the airplane mode off and on a couple of times, it got rid of the error message. Thanks!
I reset the network settings and it worked. The problem did come back a couple days later but its a quick easy fix
hi everyone,
i got same problem but slightly different. coz the “sim not installed” message appeares intermittently. i tried dropping it many times, cleaning sim and sim housing with air duster, upgrading the version of software, and turning off and on still problem has not gone. Could you anybody post the idea if you have come accross the problem and solved it.
thank you.
I have been fiddling with the phone all day.. turned it on and off repeatedly.. tried DFU mode.. took the sim in and out.. I finally got on here and dropped the phone a couple of times on the head of the phone.. then I tried the bottom.. then I tried to take the sim out, THEN drop it THEN put the sim in… with no luck…
So I finally read the post above about switching to airplane mode, then switching off of airplane mode.. and it worked!
Alas, my lcd is a bit damaged after all of it.
Time for a new phone, eh?
You can get your iphone touch screen LCD replaced, for $120-$150 ,check that out!
I was INCREDIBLY skeptical. Yeah dropping worked. Oh, apple… why do you toy with my emotions?!
I CANNOT believe it, but dropping the phone again worked! lmfao That’s hilarious, but I swear, I tried EVERYTHING imaginable, cleaning the sim, resetting everything, pushing down on the SIM card, and yes, lo and behold, dropping it, from about 5cm off the ground (onto a carpeted area) worked. Hilarious, but it worked and thank you SOOOO much
just turn the phone off take out the card turn it back on and let it give you the error message then slam the card in and it will catch and basically jumpstart the signal to work again i just had the problem and fixed it myself with this method
@Greg: Thanks! the no sim card problem can also occur if your sim card is not properly inserted, this would be the first thing which everyone should try before trying anything else.
All have failed but the reseting worked for me. Thank you!
@Nara: Thank you for sharing your experience!
The dropping the phone thing actually worked! after I tried every single other thing after two frustrating days! (of course I dropped it over a padded surface)Thanks guys..
I downloaded and installed the new iPhone 4.3.3 upgrade and afterward, I had the same, "No SIM card installed" message. After trying all of the suggestions above, I called customer support at 611 from another phone and they reset my SIM card or something. I had to have the phone off while he did this. He asked me to turn it back on, then representative called my phone to make sure it worked. He said that it might be a faulty SIM card and that I might want to have ATT test it in store to be sure. Both my SIM and phone are 3 months old, but I might need to replace the SIM.
That’s a mold-bareekr. Great thinking!
mine also got dat problem bt thedropping off strategy isnt wworking 4 me
Drop phone, screen went black, will not come on without electricity. Slide bar is in another language, and does nothing when plugged in to computer.
oh my GOD !!! I tried tapping the phone on both ends and it went back to normal, unbelievable!!!! thank you Blog
Thank you Greg~
I was on the phone and Internet all day with ATT CS……..what a waste of time. Chat online dropped me three times……any wonder? Finally asked for a phone number and they could only tell me I need a new phone???? I bought this one May 13, 2011!
Anyway, I slammed in my sim card…which I am now on intimate terms with, and it worked! Then, it went back to No Sim when I tried to charge it…I did it again, and it is working. The apple tech support did tell me to dust off the sim card, but the timing and slamming of your suggestion worked. for now, I am of little faith for long term success.
A month old iphone (my older iphone never gave me a problem and was in pristine condition, what the hell was I thinking!!!) that is so under used is a cryin’ shame. I bought the insurance, but I didn’t DROP it or damage it, it is defective and less then a month old!!! I should not have to use my insurance for something beyond my control.
Also tried the airplane and the reset, did not drop it…..too chicken.
Thanks again Greg!
Try to re-boot you iphone by power it and on and off
I pressed the power off button and held it for 10 seconds and powered it on
and it worked for me.
Switching to Airplane mode worked for me to remove SIM Card error message.
I had the same problem with my IPhone 4 when I first got it from At&T. I took the SIM card out on the right side of the phone and used a pencil eraser on the gold contacts… This is the same treatment you do on any electronic contact. I have never had the trouble again. I was at the AT&T store to look at covers for the IPad and ask about the problem. They said the manufacturer of the SIM leaves an oily film on the contacts which must be cleaned… Depending on the batch ordered by AT&T, sometimes they are clean and other times they have the oil film… They also said when they snap the SIM out of the plastic card the corner can get chipped or extra plastic is attached to the SIM not letting it seat without moving around… Feel around the edges..
Tried everything but nothing worked. I’m not sure if the ‘drop your phone ©’ method is a troll or not. I’ll go to the T-Mobile store tomorrow and hope for the best..
Same annoying issue I had with a friends phone. He gave it to me to unlock for him. Dropping the phone didnt work for me but switching between airplane mode did work thank god!
I switched it to airplane mode and it got rid of the no sim card installed message displayed, but now I don’t and can’t get signal….HELP!?
guys i am having iPhone 4 and there was same problem that sim not installed so i have tried all methods by turning off phone and putting in and out from airplane mod and hard reset but no success then i have open up "Cydia" over there i have gone to "Manage" then "Sources" over there will be repo.ultra sn0w source already added press that and you will find that there is only one app named Ultrasn0w… open it and remove that app once it is remove restart your iphone than again go to cydia–>mannage—>sources—>repo ultra snow than again there will be one app get into it and install that which you have removed when the installation finishes it will say restart springboard press that and apple logo will come and your phone will also come in normal postion than again restart your phone than your phone fill not show no sim installed and it will catch signal too
it HELP!!! me
A quick temporary fix I do:
1. Put phone in airplane mode
2. Take out SIM card
3. Put in SIM card and immediately turn off airplane mode
Works every time! Just have to do it all the time…
I dropped my iPhone 4 by accident on concrete! After that it said NO SIM so I just took a paperclip and opened the sim card slot and took it out and put it back in. It worked for me ! Good luck to everyone!
