Finally the much anticipated news has come though not from the iPhone dev team but from an individual hacker George Hotz, who you may recall as the teenage hacker who originally unlocked the iPhone.
Thought the crack currently exists only for Windows users(Not windows 7) only, a mac version would shortly be released.The jailbreaking app for the iPhone 3GS code named purplera1n. It enables the installation of third-party software not approved for Apple’s App Store .
As stated on his blog “On the iPhone” , you jsut have to download the jailbreak software and all the instructions would be given while Jailbreaking.

While checking out the comments from the users who have installed the jailbreak, jailbreaking iPhone 3G S seems like a piece of cake.John Biggs over at CrunchGear is among those who have already given already given purplera1n a go and declares the jailbreaking process “amazingly simple.”
But take note: Hotz does caution that purplera1n is in beta and suggests backing up your data before running the app.
