Is the Internet Evolving? May be “YES” , Gzip is a new evolution of data transfer on the internet , they are ready to go the extra mile in making the web faster, smarter and accurate. The TCP/IP protocol which web uses was developed 10-15 years back and forms the very basis of internet.Google now advocates time has come for a change and though they believe in developing a new protocol for the web, they have made an alternate solution “GZIP” .To explain Gzip: Just like we do the normal zip to compress files here the same thing is developed by the webserver. So when a user browses the zipped[Compressed] data is transferred which would then be interpreted by the browsers. The below video by Google very neatly describes how Gzip works .Checkout the video below!
Google underlines the following resons for bringing this innovation :
“Bandwidth is only one factor that contributes to latency. There are several other factors such as:
- Websites that do not follow best practices in web development and are unnecessary slow
- Web servers are often not optimized for speed
- Several internet protocols were designed 10/15 years ago, when websites and web applications were different
- Browsers only recently started focusing on speed. Many Internet users are using slow browsers
- We believe we all need to work together as a community to address all the factors that keep the internet slow.“
While these might seem little steps in making internet faster, better and convenient but this is way internet is evolving, and this might well be the beginning. The Gzip if accepted by the internet community might lower the data transfer barrier via the internet and this would lead to a chain of events, websites would start becoming bulkier, faster, more features and technologies might be available. Not only the whole of web , my guess is the compression algorithm would also give advantage to “Google” [ Andothe Search Engines] in better indexing [ i.e making an Index of websites] and displaying more accurate results.Such compression techniques might have been available before but the start has been given by Google and it might just turn out to be the dawn of a new era for web.
