My SIM card failure occurred when I was in a place where the signal bar level was extremely low and cutting in and out. It almost seems like the fact that the phone was struggling so hard to get a signal fried the SIM card. I don't have an old SIM to put in my iPhone, so I guess I'll have to go to my carrier to see if a new SIM card will work. Strange thing. We purchased a house to fix up in an area I do drive by BUT do not stay. When I am at the fix up house for a period of several hours my phone said no sim card. I drive away and reboot the phone (not a cold reboot) and it is fine! It has happened ALMOST every time I am at that house for a few hours!
